Girl on a Trail – meet Lisboners!
After returning from Portugal, without hesitation I knew what would be the subject of the first post about this place. This time I won’t focus on the wonderful Lisbon’s architecture, beautiful viewpoints, yellow trams or sentimental rhythms of the Fado heared during the walk in Alfama. Of course, all these elements form the unique climate of the capital of Portugal, but mainly the people of this city will remain in my memory. In fact, they create this city and its specific atmosphere, without them Lisbon certainly wouldn’t be such a cheerful place. What are the people of Portugal like? It might seem that Portuguese, like Italians or the Spanish, have…

Spain – the Basque Country
The Basque Country connotes with the separatist aspirations and ETA activity. As a matter of fact, ETA announced a definite ceasefire in 2011 but only recently, because in 2017, they surrendered an armed arsenal which was in their possession. In the memory of many people, there are still “spectacular” ETA actions, like the bombing of a car with Spanish Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco inside. The power of the explosion was so strong that the Prime Minister’s car flew over the roof of the nearby building and landed on the other side of it. Another terrorist attacks were in 2002 in Seville during the EU summit and in 2006 on…

Bosnia and Herzegovina cuisine – what to eat and where?
Each country’s cuisine is characterised by specific local products, ingredients and methods of cooking. Then how could I describe in a few words the cuisine of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)? Meat, meat and meat again! Certainly, BiH is not a country for vegetarians. Vegetables in Bosnian cusine are rather a decoration for dishes. Even a typical Shopska salad, known to me earlier from Bulgaria, in Bosnia looks much more modestly than its Bulgarian counterpart. It is known that tradition is inextricably linked to history, and it is worth adding that BiH has been under the rule of Ottoman for over 400 years. Turkish influence is visible at every step in…

Tip for a trip – weekend on the Lake Como!
What’s the best way to say good-bye to winter? Purchase a flight to Bergamo at a discounted price and in just 3 hours’ sip aromatic Italian cappuccino in a cosy cafe with a view of the famous lake Como. What can you visit there and how to organize this trip on budget? As a short introduction, there’s a lot to see, because Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, right after lake Garda and Maggiore. What’s more is one of the most deepest lakes in Europe, in some places its depth reaches over 400 m. One can say that size matters, but in my humble opinion the sights…

Girl on a Trail – Corfu
[huge_it_maps id=”2″] Corfu is the second largest Greek island in the Ionian sea. This is the ideal place to rest and spend time actively. On the island you can find numerous beautiful beaches (details here) with crystal clear water as well as monuments and other interesting points. There are many ways to see the island. Hikers can benefit from the so-called Corfu Trail. This path leads from the south to the north of the island and reaches 220 km! The island can also be visited on quad or traditionally by the car. Almost Venice The best place to start exploring the island is Corfu Town. Corfu is not a typical…

Bosnia and Herzegovina – Sarajevo
There are places that may not stand out in particular way, but they are like a magnet and evoke imagination. Sometimes, it’s an inspirational photo or an article, and sometimes it’s just their name that causes strange, poignant chills. Sarajevo and I were connected by all these things together. For the first time, I heard about this city at the elementary school in History classes. I must admit, the moment I bought the tickets to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), I felt a certain excitement that I would be at the places, let’s say where modern history began. The Latin Bridge – the place of the assasination of Austrian Archduke –…

Bosnia and Herzegovina – Beware sniper!
The journey to Bosnia and Herzegovina has made an enormous impression on me. I’m sure a great influence on my reception of this country had the fact that I went there alone. Travelling alone has a lot of advantages, but I think the most important is that it’s a time to stop and think, especially when we don’t have time for this in the daily race. So far, I’ve only known BiH from the history class: as the hot spot, which led to World War I and the scene of the tragic events of the civil war, along with the famous song U2 “Miss Sarajevo”. When I got off the…

Corfu cuisine – kumquats, sofrito, stifado…
Corfu cuisine is based mainly on vegetables, grilled meat and cheese. The real treasure of the island are lemons and oranges, which are everywhere. But the king of the fruit is the only one – it’s kumquat, a citrus tree with little oranges. Fresh kumquats are bitter and not so tasty. They’re used in the production of marmalades or famous liqueurs. Surpsingly, fish and seafood aren’t so popular in Corfu and usually more expensive than meat. So which local dishes are worth a try? Starters: The winner in this category is Greek salad. This simple mix of tomato, lettuce, cucumber, onion, olives and feta cheese with local olive…

Asisi – Basilica on the Hill of the Hell
Asisi, called by the Italians Terra dei Santi (the Land of Saints) is famous for numerous saints like St. Francis, St. Clare or St. Gabriel. The main tourist spot is obviously the St. Francis Basilica. Ironically, the Basilica was built on the Hill of the Hell, famous for executions which were performed there. The name Haven Hill was established by the Pope Gregory IX, just after the St. Francis canonization. The interior of the Basilica is full of pictures presenting the life of this saint. During the strong earthquake which stroke this place on 8th September 1997, died 4 monks and a lot of unique frescos were irretrievably damaged. Another…
